Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations place great importance on respect for the environment. In order to ensure that the lands and waters in and around Nuumaqimyiis Bay will continue to sustain future generations, Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations have adopted Huu-ay-aht’s highest principles of hišuk ma c̕awak (everything is one), ʔuuʔałuk (taking care of), and ʔiisaak (respect) as guiding values of the proposed Project.

As part of the development process, Steelhead LNG and Huu-ay-aht First Nations will conduct comprehensive environmental studies to understand the existing conditions of the area potentially affected by the proposed Project.

These studies will be undertaken with participation of Huu-ay-aht citizens, environmental experts, scientists, engineers, and those with traditional knowledge about Huu-ay-aht lands and resources. The proposed Project will also be subject to a rigorous environmental assessment process administered by the provincial and federal governments, and will meet or exceed all applicable regulatory requirements.

ʔuuʔałuk Watershed Renewal and Fisheries Enhancement

The Relationship Agreements provide funding to the ʔuuʔałuk Watershed Renewal and Fisheries Enhancement Fund to support restoration and enhancement activities for the Sarita, Sugsaw, and Pachena watersheds. Since the summer of 2017, Huu-ay-aht has been implementing the watershed renewal and enhancement program, which is helping to restore fish and wildlife habitats and populations in and around the Sarita River. The Sarita River is the most important of 35 rivers and creeks within the Huu-ay-aht’s traditional territory, and is referred to as the “heart of the people”.
